 There comes a time in everyone’s life when the body’s hormone production starts to drop off. Lower hormone levels can wreak havoc on the body, as evidenced by the many people who suffer through menopause /andropause. Replacement treatments for conditions related to a drop in hormone levels can be either natural or synthetic.

The vast majority of hormone replacement therapies in use today rely on synthetic hormones. Bioidentical hormones are different in that they are not derived from synthetic materials. They are derived from natural plant sources that are compounded by experts in a controlled setting. Once compounding is complete, the resulting natural hormones are biologically identical to human testosterone, progesterone and estradiol.

These three natural hormones replace what the body is no longer making enough of on its own. And because they are plant-based, there are few side effects associated with their use. A small percentage of patients receiving BHRT may experience mild side effects including acne, increased facial hair, or thinning hair. These are easily treatable through proper dosage.

Where synthetic hormones usually come in just a small number of static doses, bioidentical hormones can be compounded specifically to the needs of each patient. Doctors trained in replacement hormone therapy are largely trained only in the use of synthetic hormones. That may be why your physician has never recommended BHRT.
